Conflict · Strait of Hormuz, Persian Gulf · since 28 Feb 2026Active

The strait remains largely closed by Iran and the US blockade of Iranian ports continues; Iran calls the US reply to its seven conditions insufficient while saying it is still reviewing it. Ships are struck nearly every day, and the Houthi attacks on Riyadh's airport, 12 dead on 10 October by Saudi count, have widened the war.

Confirmed: CENTCOM disabled a cargo ship running the blockade on 10 October and counts four vessels disabled, 135 turned around and 10 IRGC-linked tankers destroyed since 14 July; UKMTO recorded an outbound tanker struck inside the strait at 1200 UTC on 11 October and a tanker hit by a drone at Sohar, with traffic still about 75 percent below pre-conflict levels; Saudi Arabia's GACA says the 10 October attack on Riyadh's King Khalid airport killed 12 people, one a US citizen, and wounded 309, a further attack on 11 October killed one and injured 11, and Dammam's airport was also hit; Riyadh's airport is closed. Not confirmed: the content of Iran's seven conditions or what the US accepted; who struck most of the ships hit this month; whether the US joins Saudi strikes on the Houthis, which Trump says it may. What the authorities advise: CENTCOM tells mariners to heed blockade warnings, monitor Notice to Mariners and call channel 16; UKMTO tells vessels to transit with caution; the US Mission in Riyadh recommends avoiding King Khalid airport and the FAA tells US airlines to use caution over Saudi Arabia. US regular gasoline averaged $4.354 a gallon on 5 October per the EIA; the next weekly figure is due 13 or 14 October.

What to actually know

The plain facts from the governments, militaries and agencies speaking on the record, before any of the reporting.

What is the Strait of Hormuz and how much normally passes through it?

The narrow channel between Iran and Oman linking the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman. The EIA says about 20 million barrels of oil a day moved through it in 2024, about 20 percent of global petroleum liquids consumption, and about one-fifth of global LNG trade, mostly from Qatar; 84 percent of the crude went to Asia. US crude imports through the strait were about 0.5 million barrels a day in 2024, 7 percent of US crude imports and 2 percent of US consumption. The CRS puts 2025 at 25 percent of seaborne oil trade and 19 percent of LNG.

EIA Today in Energy, 16 Jun 2025; CRS, 7 Aug

What is the difference between Iran closing the strait and the US blockade?

They apply to different ships. Iran says the strait is closed and routes ships through its own waters, attacking those that do not comply, per the CRS. The US blockade, in CENTCOM's words, is enforced against vessels transiting to or from Iranian ports and coastal areas; CENTCOM says it continues to support traffic flow through regional waters for all vessels not violating the blockade, and lets humanitarian cargoes pass. A tanker bound for Kuwait or Qatar is not a blockade target; a tanker bound for Iran is.

CENTCOM release, 13 Jul; CRS, 7 Aug

What do the shipping authorities advise right now?

JMIC keeps the threat level at severe. It says the southern route stays open and has been widened for two-way traffic, that a mine danger zone lies inside the traffic separation scheme, that ships should expect hostile radio calls from Iranian naval forces, and that contact with NCAGS is voluntary but encouraged. CENTCOM tells mariners to monitor Notice to Mariners broadcasts and call US naval forces on channel 16 in the Gulf of Oman and the strait approaches. UKMTO notes that 31 of 48 strikes since 6 July were on the southern Omani route.

Aaj TV, 12 Jul; CENTCOM release, 5 Oct; Rudaw, 3 Oct

What did the June memorandum say, and where does it stand?

Signed by Trump and Pezeshkian on 17 June, it declared the removal of the US naval blockade and Iranian arrangements for the safe passage of commercial vessels with no charge for 60 days, with the strait's future administration to be set by Iran in consultation with Oman and the Gulf states, per the CRS. The blockade was lifted on 18 June and reimposed on 14 July after ships were struck; the 60-day window ended on 17 August without extension. Iran still cites it as the basis of its conditions; Washington says Tehran did not restore traffic.

CRS, 7 Aug; Jordan News, 17 Aug

What are Iran's stated conditions?

As attributed by Reuters and Al Jazeera: seven conditions based on the Islamabad memorandum, which Iran has not published and no document opened here itemises. Its seven-day plan asks the US to release frozen Iranian funds, lift oil sanctions and end the blockade within four or five days, with normal passage and final-deal talks by day seven. Reuters reports the US reply came through Qatar and that the disagreement is over the order of steps. Trump called the plan not acceptable.

Reuters via Business Day, 4 Oct; Al Jazeera, 26 Sep

What has happened to US fuel prices?

EIA's weekly survey for 5 October: US regular gasoline $4.354 a gallon, down from $4.465 the week before and $1.23 above a year earlier; Lower Atlantic regular $3.959; on-highway diesel $6.199. EIA's October outlook: gasoline averaged $4.35 in September, is forecast at $3.91 for 2026 and $3.56 for 2027; diesel averaged $6.29 in September. The next weekly release is 14 October.

EIA Gasoline and Diesel Fuel Update, 6 Oct; EIA STEO, 6 Oct

How is oil still moving?

Lloyd's List describes a shuttle system: ships load in Gulf ports, transit the strait often with AIS off, and transfer cargo ship to ship in the Arabian Sea. Kpler's provisional data put Middle East crude exports at 18.3 million barrels a day on 30 September, about the pre-war level. Saudi Arabia also moves crude by pipeline to the Red Sea. UKMTO still counts strait traffic about 75 percent below pre-conflict levels; the two figures measure different things.

What are US missions telling Americans in the Gulf?

The US embassy in Riyadh issued a security alert on 7 October reminding citizens to exercise heightened vigilance, and on 10 October the US mission strongly recommended that citizens avoid King Khalid International Airport and surrounding areas. How this page is kept

Every line links to the document it rests on. The documents were fetched and read, not summarised from a feed. The page never says more than those documents say; where they disagree, both are kept and attributed.

Every date is the document’s own, in UTC. The counts above are counted from the entries on this page, not typed. A desk routine rereads the record every six hours and adds only what is new and sourced. More on how Backwoods is kept.
